Courageous (3 book review)

“Courageous Living: Dare to take a Stand” By Michael Catt
“Because it is important to take a faithful, fearless stand in so many areas of life, pastor and COURAGEOUS executive producer Michael Catt offers Courageous Living as a closer look at biblical themes and characters that inspired the greatly anticipated movie.”
The purpose of this book is to teach us readers to be courageous and keep going when we want to give up and give in. As a Christian, we are living in a time where luke-warmness will just not cut it. If we want to have an impact on a nation for Christ, we must take a stand, even if it means facing our biggest fears. It will move you in such a way that you wont want to keep the book for yourself, you’ll find yourself recommending it to others as well as passing it on. We can’t live in worry and fear of what others may think, we have to stay focused on God and pleasing him and serving him and doing what is right in his sight.
The author uses scripture to raise points and illustrate stories in the Bible where people stood up and took a stand, just like we need to do everyday.

“Courageous Living: The Resolution for Men” by Stephen and Alex Kendrick
This book is encourages men to step up and be the fathers & Husbands that God intended them to be. Let go of the past, live in the present and focus on the future. Be a leader, not a follower. This book would be great for a mens group as it covers such topics as How to pray for your family down to avoiding pornography. This book helps men to distinguish between what is God’s plan for our life as opposed to what we have planned for ourselves.

“Courageous Living: The Resolution for Women” By Priscilla Shirer
Although the movie associated with this book is about men taking a stand, we, as women, need to stand up as well. For God, for our children, for our marriage. The challenge this book presents to women is to live as God would want us to live. To love, honor and obey our husbands. To make a stand, be a role model for other women is a very promiscuous world filled with so much pornography and profanity.
I think this book is better used as a daily devotional in your time with God. To read, meditate and pray about what you’ve just read, ask God to help your understand. Would definitely recommend.

My Favourite Bible by Rondi DiBoer & Christine Tanvald

Well my son just loved this book! He loves Bible stories anyways, but this one seems to be focused on Jesus and his teaching with very colorful and bright illustrations. Children everywhere will enjoy this book! The wording is scripture based and very simple for children to reach and understand. Would definitely give it 5 out of 5 stars and reccomend it to anyone who has small children. It is reather long so it's not something you would complete in one night, but maybe read a chapter or 2 a night. Wonderful bedtime stories!

"I Am in Here: The Journey of a Child with Autism Who Cannot Speak but Finds Her Voice" By Elizabeth M. Bonker & Virgina G. Breen

This book broke my heart over and over again. I cannot imagine not being able to communicate with another person verbally, but yet Elizabeth finds a way to communicate through her poetry. While this book will break your heart, it will also inspire you and stir your soul at the same time. There is so much emotion conveyed through each page, I couldn’t read it all in one sitting. It’s almost like a revelation for people everywhere, not just people looking for answers for autism, but it’s about overcoming obstacles and everyday challenges. This is one family who doesn’t give up and goes to the ends of the earth to find a voice for their child. When reading Elizabeth’s poetry, I laughed, cried and even just had to close the book for a moment because her words were so deep.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, but I think it should be part of the high school curriculum in helping students realize disabilities, differences in each other and overcoming obstacles when we work together.

Real Marriage The Truth About Sex, Friendship, and Life Together by Mark & Grace Driscoll

This is the first time I’ve ever read a book by Mark & Grace Driscoll that I can recall and let me say, it probably won’t be the last! The author is blunt, non sugar coated not beating around the bush, and is clear is what he is trying to accomplish. He is telling us, as followers of Jesus Christ, marriage is not all roses and chocolate, but rather it is a work in progress requiring a lot of thought, prayer, patience and communication with your partner. The author often uses humor in his very to-the-point style of writing.

One thing I really enjoyed was that the author did not shy away from speaking about sexual relations. It is a part of life and marriage and the issue is confronted head on. I find it is especially important in todays society, with all the pornographic nature out there, to confront the issue head on.

I think it opened up my eyes to marriage as our wedding is only 8 months away. But even if you’re already married I’m sure you will enjoy it as well. I would definitely recommend this book to newlyweds or if you’ve been married for 50 years. There’s always something to learn about marriage, it is a never ending learning process.

Nearing Home by Billy Graham

“I never thought I would live to be this old. All my life I was taught how to die as a Christian, but no one ever taught me how I ought to live in the years before I die. I wish they had because I am an old man now, and believe me, it’s not easy.” -Billy Graham
Before accepting the invitation to read and review this book, I was skeptical that this book was for my age demographic. But after reading it in it's entirety, I realized this book is for people of all ages, because each day we are nearing home. I enjoy Billy Grahams approach in all his books. He is simple, to the point, very easy to read and scripture based. He teaches us that while we are here on earth we are to prepare orselves for our Heavenly home and help reach others as God would have us to do. My favourite part of the whole book was the very last chapter as Mr. Graham uses Scripture to describe to us what Heaven will be like, it makes you want to go! It provides us with a comfot in a troubled world. That we, as God's children are not meant to live without hope. If you are uncertain what spiritual "home" you are preparing yourself for, this book will make you stop and think, which way am I headed? Sure life is full of ups and downs, with the many debilitating illnesses and things that can plague you as you go through it, but we have to keep our eyes focused on God and his promise of "I go to prepare a place for you". I highly reccomend this book to young and old alike. "Book has been provided courtesy of Thomas Nelson and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. The Christmas Note Donna VanLiere

This is the first time I have read a book by this author, now I did hear of the Christmas Shoes but never picked it up, when Booksneeze was offering this follow up book I decided to snag it! Such a heartwarming tale of 2 very different ladies who’s lives intertwine, told from both points of view. Here we have Gretchen, who has just moved to a town to be closer to her Mother. She moves into a condo next door to a lady named Melissa, who’s Mother has despised her since birth. Two very different people, but the pair form a bond over a normally tragic experience, the death of Melissa’s Mother, Ramona. During the clearing out of Ramona’s things, Melissa unearths a letter telling her she has other siblings and then no other information. I don't want to give any more away, but this is truly a heart warming tale of a friendship that forms in the toughest of times. I would definitely recommend this book. I've heard mixed reviews about the 2 point narration but I truly enjoyed seeing into each woman's head and life!

Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo

Heaven is for Real I truly believe this is a book I could read again & again. “Heaven is for real” is about 4 year old Colton Burpo who, while on the operating table, has an out of body experience and gets to visit Heaven. Now, I know this story has a lot of questions and people wondering did this really happen, but I won’t disbelieve the little boy. Children have Faith beyond an adults comprehension and I truly believe he did see our mighty God in his big “chair” and the “colorful horse” Jesus rode upon. This is a truly heartwarming retelling of a little boys experience, I never wanted to put it down. I will admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but who are we to judge whom God shares his existance with? Maybe this is just what the unbeliever, or the on the fence believer needs to tell them from a child's point of view "isten, God is really real".
I think it would be good to follow up with Colton in years to come and see if there are any other spiritual happenings in his life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, only wish it was longer, but I guess the author told all there is to tell. Thinking about going out and getting the kids version for my son! Why Men Hate Going To Church

Well recently, due to a distribution centre mixup, I got to review "Why men hate going to church" by David Murrow. I was upset at first, but then thought, how can I be upset with a free book program. I contacted Booksneeze to get the correct book. They apologized and told me to keep this one too, and they're sending another that was removed from the site. How good is that? So I figured the least I could do is review this one. Well, I was a bit skeptical at first, thinking that this book wasn't for me, boy was I ever wrong. The book is written in a way to make men realize the excuses they are making for not attending church, while helping woen realize they contribute to the shortage of men in churches. The write goes on to explain how we've 'feminized' churches and tailored them towards our (womens) opinions of how they shouls be, from the beautiful floral arrangements to the pink colors. Also, the writer explains how churches have 'softened'. They continue to portray Jesus as a lamb, meek and mild all the time, when in reality, if we look at our Bible we'll see that he was also a lion. For example, when he went into the synogagues and overturned the tables due to the gambling happening there. He was angry, and rightfully so. But Preaches need to bring back their fire and brimstone preaching. Sure, the sugar coating may be nice, and politically correct, but people don;t need any more sugar coating, and that's what are turning the men away. They need to hear the truth, plain and simple. I think this was a very interesting book. I may even pass it along to my Pastor as it does give a few pointers to close that gender gap among men and women and draw more men into congregations. While I probably would never have picked up this book on my own, I do reccomend it as it was a very informative and interesting read. The authors sense of humor was a great asset to the book, made me laugh out loud at times. Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion here is entirely my own.

More Lost Than Found

The book "More lost than found" by Jared Heard tells a story of how a young boy who came to know God and serve him and lose Faith in the same place he found it, the church. The writer tended to use humor to give this book a more lighthearted approach to Christian wrongdoings and what Christians should be doing, rather than feeling like a long sermon on the hottest day of the year. It kept the reader interested in what was comming next. His personal stories also helped you connect with the author and see where he is comming from. Sometimes Christians tend to lead a lukewarm life, believing that their good deeds and kindness are 'enough' to get them into Heaven, when what they should be seeking is a deeper commitment and relationship with Christ. God doesn't want you to feel comfortable, the Christian life is a daily struggle. God wants you to turn to him, depend on him, and seek a deeper relationship. Going to church twice on Sunday and going through the motions is what's happening in a lot of churches today and causing a downfall in the Christian Faith. People talk about the turmoil and havoc going on around us everyday and how it's Satan doing his handwork because the endtimes are near. But we need to wake up people, maybe it's not Satan, but God trying to give the church a wakeup call, becuase the end times ARE near. God is desiring a closer relationship with us, his people. As the writer states in the prologue God wants us to have "A genuine faith, one that is “in the world but not of the world”". **I received this book from the publisher. Ascent from the darkness

One of the most amazing testimonies I have ever heard of how God intervened and provided hope and light in the darkest of hours. This book is about a man who made a pact with Satan that caused a 20 year downward spiral that ends in triumph. Leehan was given a specific task by Satan, which caused a group of Christian men to pray for Leehan's soul, even when that task was revealed that Leehan's goal was to kill their Pastor. It is an eye opener to believers of the war that is wagered on our souls between God and Satan and the evil forces that we so easily let in. It makes you want to pray a little harder for those who are struggling and for our families and the wars raging in our worlds. I think this is one of the most gripping, gut wrenching stories I ever read, fiction and non-fiction alike. I'm certain that this story would make a non-believer think twice about the forces of good and evil that truly do exist in todays world. Excellent book, I'd highly reccomend this to believers and non believers alike. Be warned, it tugs at your heartstrings and hard to put down.

Gabby, God's Little Angel (Sheila Walsh) Review

In this children's book, Gabby is a guardian angel sent from Heaven to protect a little girl named Sophie. Gabby is a little clumsy and inattentive until she realizes just how important her role really is. This is also a great book to use for a Sunday School lesson along with the memory verse included at the end of the book “He will put his angels in charge of you. They will watch over you wherever you go” (Psalm 91:11 ICB). It will help children understand that God has angels watching over them no matter where they are, God is always there to help them and protect them. This book has a great moral and is very nice to read to children and would also make a great bedtime story. It gives the overall feeling of security and protection at all times. It also has bright, colorful illustrations!

The Grace of God (Andy Stanley) Review

The Grace of God review by Andy Stanley

Andy Stanley did a great job putting into perspective that while we are not perfect, God’s grace is sufficient for us. Not one of us is deserving of the reward of an eternal life beyond death but the author goes on to tell us that because of God’s grace the prize is rewarded to us, if we chose to accept it. This book was very inspirational and informative and opens the readers eyes towards God’s love and forgiveness backed up with scriptural passages. The author really opens the readers eyes to the gifts God is willing to provide us, if we are willing to accept.
